Observational Drawing (2023)

TAFE Assignment

Stippling a banksia form

Deliverables: Finished 3d form of half an image.

Tools: Hands.

Materials: 0.1 - 0.7 fineliners.

This project was completed as part of my TAFE coursework. The brief was to create a 3d form from a picture by practicing tonal value. I chose to use stippling - the process of drawing multiple dots to create shape and shade.

Once again, I was inspired by Australian flora and chose a banksia pod as my subject. Using a reference image from Adobe Stock, I lightly sketched the outlines over a lightbox.

From then on, everything was by hand and pure observation from the image.

See bellow for process images.

This project took me many hours and days. I enjoyed the process, and would love to one day come back to this and stipple the whole pod.
